Fighting Stagnation!

I don't know about you, but I dislike the feeling of stagnation and repetition. The knowledge that I have same task ahead of me that I had the previous day, week, month can be grating, and I relish each opportunity to try new things. Fortunately, my occupation (I work from home) allows me ample time to pursue my hobbies and interests, but even then I still get that itchy feeling that I am stuck with the same routine ahead of me. When this happens, it's a sign that it is time to shake things up, start fresh and begin a new project or two.

Well I got that itchy feeling this past week...

What am I working on? I began composing a new piano piece, haven't written music in a while, and it has been thrilling to sit down and add a few new notes the score each day. While it is not finished yet, here are two other piano pieces that I previously composed:

This last weekend I also participated in a tournament at my local board game store that began at midnight and went to 7am - crazy right, but a great way to mixup my schedule (no I didn't win, sadly). I was able to get some lovely photographs of the pale sunrise as I left the store that morning that I would not have captured if I hadn't gone to the event.

Hello Everyone,

I don't know about you, but I seem to every once in a while have one of those creative days where, despite my best efforts, I can't seem to make progress on a project. This happened to me a few weeks back, and after two hours of work, I decided that a landscape painting was not coming together. Before putting away my paints for the day, I decided to paint a quick abstract, placing the following colors on my palette: Mars Black, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Orange Hue and Red Oxide.

Long story short, in thirty minutes, I created three striking abstracts in one sitting! Today, I am showcasing the third of the three: "Retro."

This past weekend, my wife and I decided to visited the beautiful historic Yates Mill Pond near Raleigh, NC. We hiked the trail around the pond and saw the namesake attraction. The mill has was built in 1756 and is the oldest building in the Raleigh area still standing. It was a bight clear morning and we were delighted with mild warm spring weather - a perfect day for photography and hiking!

Grey. Photo by Charles Wolf.

Hello all,

One of my favorite times of the day is sunset - I love everything about the last moments of light before the night begins. The coolness of the air, the bright colors in the sky, and the stunning cloud shapes that are set in sharp relief to the backdrop. I enjoy both painting them and photographing them. Recently, I shared a post with my favorite sunsets from the past year in a Sunset Photo Collage:

I have had a string of colorful sunsets over the past few weeks, and I thought I would share a few of the moments that I captured with my camera.

Elegance - Black and White Abstract Painting + DIY Video Tutorials!

Elegance - Abstract. Acrylic on Canvas Board, 16x20in.
Artist Charles Wolf. Impulsive Artistry © 2017.

Good morning everyone,

Have you ever had one of those days where you work on a creative project and nothing seems to come together for you?

Yep, happens to us all, and it happened to me this past week. I was working a little landscape and found that despite my best efforts, I couldn't get anything going with it. After two hours of effort, I decided that the painting was not up to snuff and that I would let it rest. I really wanted to get a good final painting out of the session and determined to paint an abstract before putting away my paint and brushes for the day. Grabbing one of larger 16x20 inch canvas boards I put out the following colors on my palette: Mars Black, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Orange Hue and Red Oxide.

Ten minutes later I had a finished monochromatic (black and white) abstract painting, but was left with unused colors on my palette. I went back for another canvas... in thirty minutes I created three striking abstracts in one sitting! Today, I am showcasing the first of the three: Elegance.

Guest Artist Feature: J. Travis Duncan, Visual Artist

Docked In Yokohama. Acrylic 16x20in.
Artist J. Travis Duncan © 2017. All Rights Reserved.

First, thank you to Charles for this opportunity to showcase a few of my pieces and tell everyone a little about me as an artist.

My name is J. Travis Duncan and I am a visual artist from Evans, Georgia which is right outside of Augusta. In my creative process, I use brushes and palette knives. As one who has always loved the loose style of the Impressionists and the vibrant color palettes of the Fauvists, my work reflects such influences. My pursuit of art has been lifelong. I cannot remember a time in which I did not paint or draw. Thus, I chose the self-taught route.

SOLitude III. Acrylic on 11x14in.
Artist J. Travis Duncan © 2017. All Rights Reserved.

I love landscapes, especially sunsets and sunrises, and have recently begun to work on non-traditional portraits as well. Typically, I try to complete a painting in one sitting in order to better capture the scene and to give it a painterly style. In some cases, this is not possible due to the size of the painting.

Vineyard In The Valley. Acrylic on 11x14in.
Artist J. Travis Duncan © 2017. All Rights Reserved.

As for my process, have painted plein air, from personal photos, or even create compositions from a plethora of reference photos. I like to blend my paints on the canvas directly via palette knife or brush. The amalgamation of hues gives it a raw, and in my opinion, a more natural feel when painting nature. Since every sunset and sunrise is unique, I believe they can be best captured in an abstract style.
